Robinson Picks Up 5th Straight Double-Double in Chargers’ Win

Sophomore forward Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) had a go-ahead three-point play in the final minutes and recorded his fifth straight double-double to help the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team hold off Glen Oaks (Mich.) 85-78 on Saturday afternoon at John M. Lewis Gymnasium. 

KEY MOMENTS

  • A 17-0 run helped the Chargers (11-4) to a 42-32 halftime lead, but Glen Oaks (2-6) scored 15 of the first 19 in the second half to grab a 47-46 advantage.
  • Tied at 63 with 5:21 to go, Robinson connected for a three-point play under the basket, and the Vikings’ Jason Carter was given a technical foul on the play as well. Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview) hit the technical free throws to give the Chargers a five-point possession and lasting lead.
  • The Vikings’ Andre Carter answered back with a 3-pointer, but Sandburg rattled off eight straight points to push its lead to 76-66 with 3:29 left. Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) 3-pointer, Young three-point play and Robinson layup helped the Chargers pick up their fourth win in the last five games.

SANDBURG STAR OF THE GAME
Robinson led the Chargers in scoring and rebounding on 7-of-16 shooting while picking up his 10th double-double of the season. The sophomore has averaged 19.0 points and 11.4 rebounds during his stretch of five straight double-doubles. Saturday’s outing pushed his season average to 17.9 points and 9.6 rebounds, both team highs.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Young had a perfect night shooting while recording a season high in scoring for the second straight game. The freshman went 4 of 4 from the floor and knocked down all seven of his free-throw attempts.
  • Freshman Elias Akale (Ashdad, Israel/Mekif Tet) scored 13.

FOR THE VIKINGS
JoMel Boyd scored 22 to match Robinson for game-high honors. Davon Bradley added 20 points, and Joe Rush had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

UP NEXT
The Chargers will host unbeaten and No. 1-ranked South Suburban at 3 p.m. Thursday. That will be the second half of a doubleheader, with the Sandburg women’s team facing the Bulldogs at 1 p.m.
